Laughing Gas: The Gentlest Way to Help Your Child Relax
If your child feels nervous about sitting in the dental chair, nitrous oxide may be all they need to feel at ease. Often called laughing gas, nitrous oxide is the mildest and most common form of pediatric sedation we offer. It works quickly, wears off in minutes, and lets your child stay awake and responsive throughout the entire visit.
Nitrous oxide is ideal for routine cleanings, fillings, and other standard procedures where a child has mild anxiety or a sensitive gag reflex. Because there are no needles, no pills, and no fasting requirements, it is also one of the most convenient sedation options for busy families.
- Child stays fully awake and able to communicate
- Effects begin in minutes and clear within minutes after removal
- No needles, no pills, and no fasting required
- Ideal for mild anxiety and routine procedures

What Happens During a Laughing Gas Visit
Arrival and Preparation
We recommend a light meal about two hours before the visit. When you arrive, our team reviews your child's health history and explains the process so both you and your child know what to expect.
Mask Placement
A small, comfortable mask is placed over your child's nose. As they breathe normally, a controlled blend of nitrous oxide and oxygen begins to flow. Within two to three minutes, your child will feel calm and relaxed.
Treatment With Monitoring
While your child is relaxed, our pediatric dentist completes the planned dental work. The team monitors your child's comfort the entire time and can adjust the level of nitrous oxide up or down as needed.
Quick Recovery
Once treatment is finished, the nitrous oxide is turned off and your child breathes pure oxygen for a few minutes. The relaxing effects disappear quickly, and your child can return to school or normal activities the same day.
Why Families Choose Laughing Gas
Fast-Acting, Fast-Fading
Nitrous oxide reaches full effect in just a few minutes and clears from the body almost as fast. There is no lingering drowsiness or extended recovery period after the visit.
Adjustable Throughout the Visit
Unlike oral medications, the level of nitrous oxide can be raised or lowered in real time. This gives our team precise control over your child's comfort from the first minute to the last.
No Special Preparation Needed
Your child does not need to fast or take medication before the appointment. A light meal beforehand is the only recommendation, making nitrous visits simple to fit into your family's schedule.
